The pair began playing cover tunes as the Wolf Brothers. Eventually, they collaborated with bassist Dean Felber, a former high school bandmate of Bryan's, and Brantley Smith, a drummer. In 1986, they adopted the name Hootie & the Blowfish, a conjunction of the nicknames of two of their college friends. [3]

Brantley Smith was the band’s original drummer. He left the band to pursue a career in music ministry, but he has made sporadic guest appearances with the band in the past (he played cello on their MTV Unplugged performance in 1996, and played drums at Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas, on June 27, 2008).

15 de nov. de 2021 · William Looper pleaded guilty to killing and sexually assaulting his girlfriend's 2-year-old son, Brantley Smith, in 2018. Brantley's mother and another man were also charged in the case, which shocked the community and investigators.
