The band were formed in the West Midlands by bassist Martin Blunt, who recruited fellow West Midlanders Rob Collins , Jon Brookes , Jon Day (Jonathan Baker) and singer-guitarist Baz Ketley. Ketley left the band and was replaced by singer Tim Burgess , who had supported the Charlatans with his previous band, the Electric Crayons.

After the demise of their band The Gift Horses, bassist Martin Blunt, vocalist and guitarist Baz Ketley, and drummer Jon Brookes regrouped and held a jam session, marking the formation of The Charlatans in 1988. They engaged several keyboardists before finding one who fit the sound they were aiming for.
The Charlatans (Often dubbed The Charlatans UK) was formed in 1988 by former Makin’ Time bassist Martin Blunt. Martin ganged up drummer Jon Brookes, guitarist Jon Day, keyboardist Rob Collins, and vocalist/guitarist Baz Ketley to form The Charlatans’ initial lineup.

Former members of the band include vocalist Baz Ketley (1989); guitarist Jon Day (Jonathan Baker) (1989–1991); keyboardist Rob Collins (1989–1996), who died in a car accident during recording of their fifth album; and drummer Jon Brookes (1989 - 2013), who died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010.
