Azteca was a Latin rock band formed in 1972 by Coke Escovedo and his brother Pete Escovedo, who had just finished stints with Latin rock pioneering band Santana.
Azteca was a latin rock band from San Francisco, formed by Coke Escovedo (ex Santana). The sound is a bit funky/jazz/soul oriented. "Mamita Linda" is a very nice and catchy song.

Azteca ist eine Latin-Rock-Formation, die sich Anfang 1972 in der Chicanoszene von San Francisco bildete. Gründer waren die Perkussionisten Thomas „Coke“ Escovedo und Pete Escovedo. Das üppig besetzte Ensemble mischte afrokubanische Rockmusik im Stile von Santana mit Soul-, Funk- und Jazzelementen.
Azteca was the first large-scale attempt to combine multiple musical elements in the context of a Latin orchestra setting, and featured horns, woodwinds, multiple keyboards, three vocalists, guitars, drums, and multiple Latin percussionists.
(Guitarist Neal Schon, another former member of Santana, sat in on guitar, bringing the total lineup to 17 musicians.) The band signed to Columbia Records and released its self-titled debut album in December 1972; it spent nine weeks in the lower reaches of the charts starting in January 1973.
Quite a pleasant rock 'n' soul twist on Santana and Malo, with a good few other influences thrown in. Neal Schon from Santana is featured. But don't expect any extended jams like with Santana, as this is much more straight and mainstream.
