Stults and Mack were shuffling between groups when a fellow musician, rhythm guitarist John Torok, invited the two, along with bass guitarist Barry Van Engelen and drummer Andy Angellotti, to a jam session. The group experimented with chord patterns and guitar licks, while playing popular songs.

Also including rhythm guitarist John Torok, bassist Barry Van Engelen and drummer Andy Angellotti, the Segments wrote their first original, "The Story of My Life," after just their second rehearsal session; they soon entered the local United Sound studio to record the track, issuing it as their SVR label debut single in early 1967.

The members of the Unrelated Segments were from Detroit’s downriver suburbs. Lead vocalist Ron Stults and lead guitarist Rory Mack were from Taylor, bassist Barry Van Engelen from Lincoln Park, drummer Andy Angellotti from Melvindale, and rhythm guitarist John Torock from Allen Park.
