James Shallenberger has been an active violinist – both performing and instructing – for over 30 years. He achieved a Masters degree from University of Washington (Bachelor degree from UC Berkeley). James’ performance experience includes: Orchestral: The San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the Oakland Symphony, and many more.
In August 1973, shortly after hearing Black Angels, he gathered local violinist Jim Shallenberger, violist Tim Killian, and cellist Walter Gray, then a Curtis Institute student home on vacation, to read chamber music. The foursome became Kronos Quartet, named for the infanticide-prone Greek god of time.

Shallenberger is a member of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Orchestras. He is one of the extended faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
