In the early 1990s he formed The Electric Bebop Band, giving new life to old bop standards with an electrified lineup of two tenor saxophones, two guitars, electric bass and drums. During this time Paul also recorded the On Broadway series, a collection of standards from the Great American Songbook.

Motian began his career as a bandleader in the early 1970s. Perhaps his two most notable groups were a longstanding trio of guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano, and the Electric Bebop Band where he worked mostly with younger musicians on interpretations of bebop standards.
