Chorister School is a Church of England school with boarding and day options for pupils aged 3 to 11. It is linked to Durham School and offers a Christian framework, excellent facilities and a happy learning environment.
A choir school is a school attached to a Christian cathedral, major church or college chapel and educates the choristers who sing at services. Nearly all of them ( Westminster Abbey Choir School is the exception) also educate children who are not choristers.
The Chorister School, Durham and Durham School will merge from September 2021 to form one Foundation. The new Foundation will continue to support choristers for Durham Cathedral and offer enhanced academic, pastoral and co-curricular opportunities for all pupils.
As a recognition of the history of the schools, the Pre-Prep is known as Bow School, the Prep is known as The Chorister School and the Senior School is called Durham School. The Chorister School is on the Cathedral site, in the College, and forms a part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Choristers. The chorister experience is probably the best musical education available to children between the ages of 9 and 13. It also brings the benefit of skills that last a lifetime. Becoming a chorister boosts confidence and teaches independence, dedication and organisation.
