  3. Shakuhachi Club NYC. Violent Femmes bass player Brian Ritchie takes up the traditional Japanese wooden flute and makes some very untraditional shakuhachi music with some of the best boho musicians on the New York scene.

  4. In addition to his bass playing, Ritchie is proficient at the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute. He acquired a Jun Shihan (shakuhachi teaching license) in March 2003 from James Nyoraku Schlefer, and his professional name is "Tairaku" ("big music" in Japanese ). [5]

  5. 25 de jul. de 2004 · Whether or not it's time for a shakuhachi repertory band is arguable, but either way Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie seems an unlikely candidate to lead the venture. Here he is, however, with a quintet and a convincing set of standards and originals, treating the five-holed wooden Japanese flute as if it were just one of the guys.
