La banda se formó 1996 por Ed Udhus y Greg Bergdorf (baterista y guitarrista de la banda 409), el bajista Ben Osmundson (antes de 3-Ply), y el guitarrista Justin Mauriello (antes de Once There). Los cuatro músicos, cuyas bandas compartían el mismo sitio de ensayo, experimentaron nuevos sonidos juntos, y pronto se hicieron amigos.
Zebrahead was formed in La Habra, California in summer 1996 by guitarist Greg Bergdorf and drummer Ed Udhus, (both formerly of the band 409), bassist Ben Osmundson (formerly of 3-Ply) and singer/rhythm guitarist Justin Mauriello (formerly of Once There).
