Amorphis is a Finnish heavy metal band founded by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen in 1990. [1] Initially, the band was a death metal act, but on later albums they evolved into playing other genres, including progressive metal and folk metal.
Progressive/Death/Doom Metal (early); Melodic Heavy Metal/Rock (later) Themes: Death, Finnish legends, Kalevala. Current label: Reigning Phoenix Music. Years active: 1990-present. The first band added to the Metal Archives. Amorphis is derived from the Greek 'amorphous' which means without determinate form, shapeless.
