Try to match the thickness as close as possible for a sturdy repair—choose darning yarn for thick, wool socks, or embroidery floss or regular thread for thinner materials.
A Sock with a hole in it. Step 1 - Place your sock over a tennis ball or lightbulb. (you can also just stick your hand inside the sock if you prefer). Step 2 - Thread your needle. (I am using white thread just to make it easier for you to see what I'm doing in the pictures)
