Lil' Chief. Memphis Industries. Sub Pop. Academy Fight Song. Website. The Ruby Suns. The Ruby Suns are an indie pop group from New Zealand. They formed in 2004 when Californian Ryan McPhun moved to Auckland and started playing in several bands such as the Brunettes, the Tokey Tones, and the Reduction Agents .
The band was originally called Ryan McPhun & The Ruby Suns and the album was released with this title in New Zealand on Lil' Chief Records. The album has subsequently been released in the UK on Memphis Industries in 2006 and in Australia on Popfrenzy in 2007 with different art, and the title truncated to reflect the band's new name.
12 de jun. de 2017 · Having relocated from Auckland to Norway in 2013, Ryan McPhun has just released the fifth album to be created under his band pseudonym The Ruby Suns. The stylistically-diverse Sprite Fountain is now available on Sellout! Music, and was produced pretty much single-handedly by McPhun in his new Scandinavian studio.
Ryan McPhun is a musician who grew up in Ventura, but also spent a great deal of his youth in New Zealand (eventually moving there in his late teens). His self-titled debut album was filled with sparkling indie pop, with layers of instrumentation worthy of Brian Wilson and saw him signed to the UK label Memphis Industries.
When The Ruby Suns’ main mover Ryan McPhun alighted in Oslo, Norway in the winter of 2010, he knew he’d found an artistic haven. Recently split from his long-term girlfriend and bandmate, on holiday from his adopted home of New Zealand, McPhun was ready for something new.
