Matthew McQuater died at the age of 73 in Dallas, TX, on 19 December 2000. Johnny Mason filed for use of the trademark The Clovers in October 2001 (the case was abandoned in November 2002). John Bowie had both of his legs amputated, and suffered a fatal heart attack in the fall of 2000.

The Clovers released their first album, The Clovers, in 1956. They have released four studio albums ( the Clovers, Dance Party, In Clover, Lovebug, Love Potion Number Nine) between 1956 and 1965. The clovers reached the national charts 21 times between 1951 and 1959.
In Austin, Texas, Harold Lucas’ version of the Clovers were reunited with John Bailey, Matthew McQuarter, and Harold Winley, briefly. Harold Lucas’s version of the group performed at a benefit concert for Bill Harris, the group's guitarist.
Over the next few years Matthew McQuater (tenor) and Harold Winley (bass) replaced two of the original members and through local record store owner Waxie Maxie Silverman they acquired a manager, Lew Krefetz who in late 1950 got them a session for tiny Rainbow Records in New York.
