Atelier 17 was an art school and studio that was influential in the teaching and promotion of printmaking in the 20th century. Originally located in Paris, the studio relocated to New York during the years surrounding World War II. It moved back to Paris in 1950.
Launched in 2024, The Atelier 17 Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization that encourages new research about the history of Atelier 17 on the occasion of this avant-garde printmaking workshop’s centennial in 2027. In 1933 Hayter moved to 17, rue Campagne-Premiere and so began the Atelier 17 proper. The bigger space allowed for more working space and the workshop was now open for three days a week. Established professionals and beginners worked side by side.
