Blues pianist Champion Jack Dupree was raised in New Orleans, and honed his blues and boogie woogie chops in New Orleans’ barrelhouses before beginning to travel extensively, performing with musicians such as Scrapper Blackwell and Big Bill Broonzy.
Bestowed with his name after a career as a Golden Gloves-winning boxer, Champion Jack Dupree later went on to become a legend in the music world for his talents as a blues and boogie-woogie piano player.
Born in New Orleans on July 23, 1909, according to official records (but July 4, 1910, by Dupree’s account), Dupree came up under a crew of barrelhouse pianists in the Crescent City, later making stops in Indianapolis (where he ran a restaurant), Chicago, and New York.
