New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band. The group emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969 and its original lineup included several members of the Grateful Dead. [2] [3] The band is sometimes referred to as the New Riders or as NRPS .

More importantly, the performance was recorded for a KQED-tv public television program, so there might even be not only audio but professionally shot video of this event.

They formed the New Riders of the Purple Sage with Nelson and the Dead’s Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh. Nelson who sang one of New Rider’s biggest hits, a cover of bluegrass great Peter Rowan’s “Panama Red,” stayed with the group for 13 years, but left in 1982 and starting writing songs with longtime pal Robert Hunter, among others.

Before long, David Nelson on lead guitar, Bob Mathews on bass, and Mickey Hart on drums rounded out the lineup of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The band was soon playing many shows with the Grateful Dead. Bob Mathews stepped down in the fall of ’69 and Phil Lesh filled in until Dave Torbert joined the permanent lineup.
