The Austin High School Gang was the name given to a group of young, white musicians from the West Side of Chicago, who all attended Austin High School during the early 1920s. They rose to prominence as pioneers of the Chicago Style in the 1920s, which was modeled on a hurried version of New Orleans Jazz .
In 1922 five kids from Austin High School out at Chicago’s west end, got up a little band. The buff brick high school they attended was so much like others it was hard to describe, and the boys themselves were the sort who might have gone on to college but for their interest in music.

One afternoon in 1922, a gang of kids found themselves hanging out at their favorite ice cream parlor—a neighborhood place called the Spoon and Straw on Chicago's middleclass west side. The Spoon and Straw was their daily haunt after classes at Austin High across the street.
