The band originally consisted of the Scroggins sisters, Renee (vocals), Valerie (drums), Deborah (bass) and Marie (congas, vocals) and friend Tito Libran (congas, vocals). The band's name stands for emerald, sapphire, and gold.

Valerie Scroggins’ drumming ties the band to genres that are often falsely placed in opposition to one another. Her drumming is as improvisational and dynamic as she is. She plays voraciously and mischievously, with an emphasis on the simple pleasure of music making itself.
ESG. An art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx, ESG (Emerald Sapphire & Gold) was formed by sisters Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins, all of whom handle vocals and percussion, and friends David Miles (guitar) and Leroy Glover (bass).
30 de abr. de 2018 · It’s a Monday afternoon and Scroggins, vocalist and founding member of New York funk band ESG, is at home in Atlanta. Scroggins is in the midst of some time off due to a nasty knee injury after the band’s last live shows in 2015.
Valerie Scroggins remains one of my drum icons. They began in the early 1980’s and some members have reunited for performances throughout the last few years. They’ve been musicians for several decades!
Emerald and sapphire are Valerie and Renee Scroggins' birthstones, and gold refers to the record certification. [5] . The blue, green, and yellow cover artwork was adapted for ESG's 2000 compilation A South Bronx Story. The artwork for its 2015 Record Store Day release of The Moody EP is loosely based on the ESG cover.
