Lang’s little match girl passion successfully walks tightropes between sacred traditions and secular times, icy remoteness and striking candor. The piece originated in Lang’s desire to repurpose the imagery and emotions of the great sung Passions of Christ for a modern and not-necessarily-Christian audience.
The Little Match Girl Passion is a choral work by David Lang, based on the 1845 Hans Christian Andersen story, "The Little Match Girl". It is influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach ’s St Matthew Passion (1727) and won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2008.

The composition won Lang a Pulitzer Prize, the recording won a Grammy Award, and the score has since become one of the most performed new works in the world.
