HOWEVER, I feel like a canon book or comic that continued the story would be appropriate. Not as cool as actually getting a season 3 but better than nothing.

If you read the Salvation comics you'll understand why he is more important later on in the time line after the events of the movie. That's what was really bad about the movie was they didn't explain the background for anyone, you just know who Kyle and John are.
