Was getting into silent hill 2 content recently (also spoilers btw) and the way maria is an actual real being, but still a silent hill monster. It got me thinking, has there ever been a game where the protag is one those? Like mid journey with their target something happens that breaks their monster code and makes them sentient or something.

This is cool, and it nails the aesthetic. I was thinking recently of trying to make a Silent Hill-like game (tribute, homage, rip-off, however you want to call it) and base it more on the first game's gameplay and graphics.
