Magritte fue diagnosticado de cáncer de páncreas en 1963, pero aún así viajó a Nueva York en 1965 para realizar una retrospectiva de su obra en el Museo de Arte Moderno MoMA. Finalmente en 1967 Magritre murió a los 68 años. La influencia de Magritte se ha extendido a la cultura pop.
