Most of the 20 species inhabit open areas, such as grasslands, but some also live in forests. All armadillos possess a set of plates called the carapace.

14 de may. de 2024 · One of the largest armadillo species, found in 27 (central and southern) of Mexico’s 32 states - particularly Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas - is the 9-banded variety, Dasypus novemcinctus. According to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, above central Mexico armadillos are primarily found only along the coasts (pic 3) - presumably because the interior of the country is too dry.
