It's intentional. Primarily back in Phase 1, but not quite so much nowadays. All of the Gorillaz are molded after various primates. 2-D is a great ape, Noodle is a monkey (a minkey 🐒), Murdoc is like a baboon or something like that, and Russel is a gorilla. Because they're a band called Gorillaz. A band of gorillaz.
My opinion is that this is the same uneven canon as Murdoc's green skin and the fate of Cyborg Noodle. In some interviews, due to poor eyesight, he literally met with a hanger, and in others he easily plays instruments, comments on people's hairstyles and movies, as well as rides cars, motorcycles and roller skates.
