Withdrawing from alcohol gave Hopper delirium tremens. He became psychotic. While clipping hedges around the facility, he began hearing voices. Hopper went on a rampage, convinced that he could only keep the voices at bay with his incessant clipping. He was subdued and put in a straitjacket.
