A crew of 7 works better than a larger group as each character has different traits and personality so we are invested in them as they succumb one by one to the Alien creature. If you look at Aliens (‘86), a fantastic wholly different follow up, and others in the franchise, the crews get bigger and as such you don’t have time to invest in every person and they all become so much cannon fodder.
