Hace 23 horas · The Belgian historian Henri Pirenne was the first to argue for the continuation of the Mediterranean trade network after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 1920s. His thesis was that the decline only occurred after the rise of Islam in the East, and subsequent fall of the eastern and southern Mediterranean coastlines to the empire that erupted out of Arabia in the 8th century.
