Kubrick’s tentative first feature has big problems — a ponderous script and war-movie ambitions it can’t deliver — but it qualifies as a noble first effort.

I have heard the idea that fear and desire are two sides of the same coin, that there cannot be fear without desire. I took this to mean that if I fear something, it is because that deep down I in some way desire to experience it.
