Composed by guitarist Randy Bachman and lead singer Burton Cummings, the song is basically a reverse Dear John letter stating, "No time left for you". There are two versions of the song. The original recording was done for The Guess Who's album Canned Wheat.

Then he created a new band and toured as “The Guess Who” without any approval from Burton or Randy. This new band played covers of all the great Bachman/Cummings songs claiming to be “The Guess Who”.
