As a child, Rawls sang in a Baptist church choir, and he later performed with Sam Cooke in the 1950s gospel group Teenage Kings of Harmony. In 1956 he stepped back from his burgeoning.

As a child, he was shuttled between various foster homes and was exposed to poverty, racism, and violence. In spite of his difficult beginnings, Rawls became an immensely talented singer, who was comfortable in a range of genres from gospel to pop to R&B.
