I understand that uncle Iroh is a fan favorite, however most of his development happened off screen and we were just presented with the end result. Calling him the best written character is like calling him the strongest firebender - it's just simply not true.

Why did Iroh continue a war hero even after discovering true firebending from the Dragons? Discussion. Just putting out there that the question in the title is largely rhetorical, here's my point: It's canon that Iroh discovered the last Dragons of the Sun Warriors long before he stepped down as General.
