Traveling to Sunspear, Tywald got into a bitter fight with Oberyn, who blamed him for Elia’s death while Doran Martell considered keeping Tywald's family hostage in Dorne. Despite the tensions, Tywald and Oberyn managed to reconcile during Elia's funeral while he entered into an accord with Doran.

He and his remaining two friends, Archibald Yronwood and Gerris Drinkwater, are forced to become sellswords to reach Slaver's Bay.
