You’ll know this smallish viper by its distinctive zig-zag pattern on its back. There are a few melanistic snakes that become almost black — they’re almost always female.

The striking yellow or orange dorsal stripe that runs from the head to the tail contrasts with the dark olive or black body of the Black-Necked Gartersnake (Thamnophis cyrtopsis).
