His designs combined broad meadows and native woodlands that immersed visitors in restorative "passage through scenery."

They advocated for a bird-friendly retrofit, and in 2023, the Conservancy reached out to NYC Audubon to consult on the frequency of collisions at their Volunteer House and ask what could be done to make a change.

But his writings on the slaveholding South, including Texas, enjoyed critical acclaim in the 1850s for their detailed descriptions and keen social commentary.

Olmsted moved his home to suburban Boston in 1883 and established the world's first full-scale professional office for the practice of landscape design. During the next century, his sons and successors perpetuated Olmsted's design ideals, philosophy, and influence.
