Jimmy Reed stierf aan ademhalingsproblemen in 1976, in Oakland, Californië, acht dagen kort voor zijn 51e verjaardag. Hij is begraven op de Lincoln Cemetery in Worth, Illinois. Reed werd postuum opgenomen in de Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 en de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
