They're definitely Britpop. They have other links to football, a couple of years before Three Lions (and maybe why he asked to write Three Lions), his arguably best song The Life of Riley was used on the Match of the Day's Goal of the Month competition. Change, Lucky You, Perfect and Sugar Coated Iceberg all have a very Britpop feel.

He had long been part of the music scene, as a member of a number of bands in his native Liverpool, as a sought-after producer and, since 1989, as a pop star in his own right thanks to The Lightning Seeds, which was the name taken to launch his solo career.
