In the 1623 First Folio, they wrote that they had published the Folio "onely to keepe the memory of so worthy a Friend, & Fellow aliue, as was our Shakespeare , by humble offer of his playes".

The first run printed 750 copies, of which 233 survive, including one that turned up in 2016. These fetch millions at auction. Half the works in the First Folio had never been printed.

The first folio versions of Shakespeare were not published until after his death in 1616, first by his friend the poet Ben Johnson and then later by John Heminges and Henry Condell, fellow actors in Shakespeare's acting company.
