Dolphy is impressive on this release as both someone taking jazz into new avenues and also keeping in that Parker tradition but with variations. Where? is a ballad with Carter on arco cello.

I’ve listened to Far Cry 4 times in the last 2 days - my favorite Eric Dolphy album by a wide margin; I especially like Jaki Byard’s playing. I have that same copy of "Far Cry" and think it does a quite nice job of getting that RVG sound without the man's own metalwork.

He was also the first important bass clarinet soloist in jazz, and among the earliest significant flute soloists; he is arguably the greatest jazz improviser on either instrument.
