In Japan, there exists a style of theatre called Bunraku, which is done with life-like puppets. From what I can gather, there is usually a single narrator who sits behind a podium, seemingly on-book, accompanied by a Shamisen and maybe drums. This narrator does the voices and singing for all the characters.
