Over 125,000 participants were enrolled in 131 colleges and universities in the United States in the V-12 program.
The Navy V-12 program was created to generate a large number of officers as well as to offset the dropping enrollment at colleges. Backed by the federal government, the program paid tuition to participating colleges and universities for college courses that were taught to qualified candidates.
The Navy V-12 College Training Program was developed during World War II to supplement the force of commissioned officers in the United States Navy. Hobart College was designated as one of the colleges to have a Navy V-12 Unit.
Between July 1, 1943, and June 30, 1946, more than 125,000 individuals were enrolled in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which was offered in 131 colleges and universities throughout the United States. The purpose of the V-12 program was to grant bachelor's degrees to future officers from both the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps.
