Gacyclidine, a potent and specific phencyclidine analogue noncompetitive N-methyl D-aspartate receptor antagonist, was previously shown to provide neuroprotection through improvement of the functional, histologic, and electrophysiologic status of the injured rat spinal cord following experimental contusion with an absence of dose-related adverse effects.
