As the NME observed “808 State revolutionised a whole genre of music in the late-80s, inspiring Underworld, Orbital and the Chemical Brothers in the process.” Formed in Manchester in 1988 by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson, 808 State’s first album – Newbuild - is now regarded as a milestone in UK electronica.

808 State. Manchester’s techno pioneers were formed in 1988 when Martin Price, owner of the city’s Eastern Bloc underground record store, teamed up with Graham Massey, formerly of Factory Records’ Biting Tongues and more recently known as a producer. The debut album, Newbuild, was cut in collaboration with fellow Mancunian Gerald Simpson.
Newbuild was followed by 808 State's first 12‑inch EP, Let Yourself Go. Meanwhile, another acid EP, featuring the tracks 'Massage‑a‑Rama' and 'Sex Mechanic', was released under the pseudonym Lounge Jays. Both songs would later be reissued by Rephlex as part of the Prebuild LP. Quadrastate
