Shaft couplings are mostly used for four purposes: (1) power transmission, (2) joining misaligned shafts, (3) reducing shocks and friction, and (4) being easily assembled and disengaged.
Couplings can provide multiple performances such as absorption of mounting errors (flexibility), high positioning accuracy (high rigidity), contribution to higher accuracy and longer service life by absorbing vibration and blocking of heat transfer. There are many kinds of couplings.
Grid couplings are aimed at high output, high torque gear applications, while gear couplings are heavy duty products with large bore capacities. Most products are made from cast iron, though some (such as chain couplings) use carbon steel. Surface treatment techniques, including phosphate coating, help to protect against corrosion.
