Wild Horse Island is managed as primitive area. Groups over 15 must have a permit. Permits will only be issued for activities related to educational, interpretive or administrative activities. Contact the Park Manager for further information. Park size: 2,160 acres. Elevation: 2,900 feet.
Wild Horse Island used to be farmed and in the 30s even hosted a lodge. Visitors can still find apple and pear orchards, so if you’re feeling peckish, grab a snack! Besides the great views and interesting wildlife, you can also find rare, endangered plant life on Wild Horse Island.
Wild Horse Island, a 2,160-acre island within Flathead Lake offers a rare experience surrounding a unique island ecosystem. With an easy-going trail system, a hike offers the chance to observe a variety of wildlife species, from deer and bald eagles to bighorn sheep and of course horses.

The shoulder seasons are the best time to visit for balancing comfortable temperatures with reduced crowds, but summer remains the most popular time to go.

North Carolina is home to two different herds of wild horses, one on Ocracoke Island and another near the town of Corolla, also on the Outer Banks. The Ocracoke herd is estimated to have descended from Spanish Mustangs brought over by early settlers in the 16th century, while the Currituck population has its origins in Colonial-era farming stock.
