Because clear demarcation of the trilaminar trophoblast subtypes of the labyrinth is difficult at the light microscopy level, double in situ hybridization was also performed using Synb and Ctsq, a marker of S-TGCs (Simmons et al., 2007), to ascertain whether unstained areas indicative of SynT-I cells could be detected between the positive signals for these two genes.
