24 de jul. de 2014 · Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses is all about the Great Plague; the apparent whimsy being a foil for one of London’s most atavistic dreads (thanks to the Black Death). The fatalism of the rhyme is brutal: the roses are a euphemism for deadly rashes, the posies a supposed preventative measure; the a-tishoos pertain to sneezing symptoms, and the implication of everyone falling down is, well, death.
A‘ring of roses’ was the red rash that was often one of the first signs of plague. A ‘pocket full of posies’ was thought to ward off the bad smells that people thought were causing the plague. Sneezing and coughing was the final, fatal symptom of the plague. ‘We all fall down’ is meant to mean falling down dead from the plague!
Or at least that’s how I remember it. ‘Ring-a-Ring o’ Roses’ is traditionally associated with the plague – the Great Plague of London in 1665 or the Black Death of the late 1340s – and it is easy to see why.
