While the original ceremony consisted of hotel staff members actually dumping burning embers from the top of Glacier Point, the present-day event is simply an illusion of sunlight that occurs each year if Horsetail Falls is flowing.

Due to the increasing popularity of the event, reservations will be required for anyone driving into Yosemite on the weekends of February 10–11, 17–19, and 24–25, 2024. This reservation needs to be made in addition to paying the usual park entrance fee.
