Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (9 janvier 1773 - 22 mars 1845) est la sœur aînée de Jane Austen, ainsi qu'une aquarelliste anglaise amateur. Tout au long de sa vie, elle demeure la confidente et la meilleure amie de sa sœur, au sein d'une famille unie où elles ont par ailleurs six frères.
24 de mar. de 2018 · Cassandra inherited £1000 from him, which must have been useful even in her heartache – like her sister, Cassandra Austen remained single for the rest of her life. Subject to the same dependencies as her mother and sister, she lived more or less on the goodwill of her brothers and their families, finally settling into Chawton Cottage in 1809 where she lived for the remainder of her life.

She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight—six boys and two girls. Her closest companion throughout her life was her elder sister, Cassandra; neither Jane nor Cassandra married.
Austen's readers have long wished for a good picture of their favorite author. The only authenticated picture of Jane Austen is a small pencil and watercolor sketch made by her sister, Cassandra, on display in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Cassandra also painted a watercolor of her in a blue dress with her face hidden by a bonnet.

30 de ene. de 2015 · After Austen’s death in 1817, Cassandra kept her manuscripts until her own death in 1845. For more than a century thereafter, the notebooks were nearly forgotten and quietly made their way down the family tree, until they ended up in the hands of Cassandra’s great-granddaughter’s niece, who sold them at Sotheby’s in July of 1977.
9 de ene. de 2024 · Cassandra had a dog named Scout. Ten years after Jane’s death in 1827, Cassandra was 54 years old when Mrs Austen died. She was now living alone in Chawton Cottage, got a dog and named him Scout. To the amusement of the villagers, he would carry the milk from Chawton House in a pail with the handle between his teeth!
