Biografia. Chabat nasce ad Orano, nell'allora Algeria francese, il 24 novembre del 1958 da una famiglia ebraica.Nel 1963, un anno dopo la dichiarazione d'indipendenza dell'Algeria, il piccolo Alain si trasferisce con la famiglia in Francia, dove cresce nel comune di Morsang-sur-Orge.Ha cominciato a lavorare come fumettista e, dal 1980, trova lavoro presso Radio Andorra e France Inter.

To date, Chabat has received four César nominations for his work as an actor (three for Best Actor, one for Best Supporting Actor), but has yet to win the award. Notable appearances include Alain Corneau's Le Cousin (1997), Maurice Barthélémy's Casablanca Driver (2004), Éric Lartigau's Prête-moi ta main (2006) and Michel Gondry's La Science des rêves (2006).
