Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend based on the historical Johann Georg Faust ( c. 1480–1540 ). The erudite Faust is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, which leads him to make a pact with the Devil at a crossroads, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.
Zunächst wird F. von den beiden ersteren Georg, von den beiden letzteren Johann genannt, doch könnte Wier auch die Angabe des Vornamens von Manlius entlehnt haben. Gegen die Identität spricht es auch, daß Georg schon 1506 auftritt, während die Hauptthätigkeit Faust's von Wier gegen das Ende der dreißiger Jahre verlegt wird.
